California Tax the Rich Day

DSA chapters across California are taking action today to tax the rich for schools and health care! We’re working to pass California Propositions 3 & 40 by bannering on freeway overpasses, human billboarding on busy intersections, demonstrating in front of billionaires’ homes, leafleting in public spaces, & having press conferences. Find a local event in your area!

Some reasons to tax the rich are:

  1. The wealthy need to pay their fair share of taxes to support education and health care.

  2. Education and health care should be rights for all, not privileges reserved for the few.

  3. If Prop 3 fails, the richest Californians will receive an entirely unnecessary tax cut, and students will suffer drastic reductions in their access to quality education.

  4. If Prop 40 fails, millions of Californians will lose their health care.

  5. Economic inequality is at an all-time high. Billionaire Trump supporters are spending enormous sums to control our democracy on behalf of profits over people. Passing Props 3 and 40 will rein in the billionaires and provide help to working families.

  6. People’s needs, not billionaires’ greed (Workers over Billionaires).

California Proposition 3 will make permanent the high-income tax rates that voters approved in 2012. This will maintain $5-15 billion/year in state revenue that is allocated to education (89% to K-12, 11% to community colleges).

California Proposition 40 creates a one-time 5% tax on billionaires. This could raise tens of billions of dollars which will primarily go to health care (90% to health care, 10% to food assistance or education-related programs).
